Former AEL goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa announced his decision to retire permanently from active play, bringing to a close a remarkable soccer career that spanned more than two decades.
The iconic Mexican goalkeeper announced his decision in a heartfelt video posted on social media. The final match of his career was against the Czech Republic in a 2026 World Cup qualifier, when he symbolically bid farewell to the pitch by kissing the goalposts.
After Mexico’s elimination by England, Ochoa was unable to hold back his tears. In his farewell message, he thanked his family, his teammates, and the fans who had supported him every step of the way.
“I never imagined how far a dream could take me. Today, I can only look back with pride and say thank you. I take with me the love of millions of people and the peace of mind that I gave my all for Mexico,” he said.
The 41-year-old goalkeeper emphasized the significance the goalkeeper’s position held for him: “My gloves were never just gloves. They were a promise that I would step up when I was needed most—on every penalty kick, every one-on-one, and every final play.”
He also made special mention of the Mexican national team, with which he identified more than almost any other player. “I can’t imagine my career without the national team. That’s where I understood the true magnitude of responsibility. The time has come for me to take off my gloves and pass them on to others,” he emphasized.
In closing, he sent a message to Mexico’s next goalkeeper: “Trust yourself. The goalkeeper’s position doesn’t require perfection; it requires pride.”
