The meeting with Vangelis Marinakis at a restaurant in Vouliagmeni convinced Oliver Glasner to take over at Nottingham, and he went from being reluctant to say the big “yes,” as he himself told the Telegraph:
“They were constantly reaching out to me, and I always said no. I told Vangelis Marinakis, honestly, that I wasn’t considering Nottingham Forest. The team wouldn’t be playing in Europe, and I’m used to playing European soccer, and I like playing European soccer — whether that’s by winning the Conference League, winning the Europa League, or playing in the Champions League. But then I looked into it more closely, and there are two reasons why I changed my mind, and I told him so. The first is that I think there’s more potential in the team than they’ve shown. And the second is Mr. Marinakis—it’s his ambition, because I’m very ambitious myself. We had a truly fantastic dinner and talked about everything,” Glasner said.
“I told Mr. Marinakis—and everyone else—that our goal shouldn’t be to play in Europe just once. We don’t want to be a flash in the pan. Last year was very difficult. I can’t say why—I don’t want to. Perhaps expectations were too high after finishing seventh the previous year. The Premier League is so competitive that you can’t afford to make mistakes. And that’s what we need right now: to have a strategy, to determine what steps we need to take so that we can continue to grow and improve,” he added.
