A few days after his release from Barcelona, Willy Hernangómez spoke to “Marca” about the next chapter of his career; he didn’t hide his disappointment with his time at the “Blaugrana” and expressed his certainty that someday he would play on the same team as his brother, Juancho.
Referring to his time at Barcelona, the Spanish center emphasized that he gave it his all, though things did not turn out as both sides would have liked.
“It didn’t turn out the way we both wanted. I fought hard and gave my all for Barça. I don’t think I missed a single game or practice. I played through the pain; I always tried to be ready. I’m grateful for the opportunity to return from the NBA, but now I’m looking forward to new challenges and finding a place where I can truly compete and build something special,” he said.
Regarding his future and the possibility of continuing with Baskonia, the 31-year-old remained cautious: “Maybe they want me there. I don’t know. We’ll have to wait and see how the market plays out, since there’s a lot of movement. I’m calm and I trust my agent to find the best option,” he said.
Finally, when asked if he was afraid he’d end his career without ever playing alongside his brother, Juancho, he was categorical.
“No, no, no. We both know it. I don’t know when it will happen—whether this year, next year, or in two years—or for which team, but we both want to play together and compete for titles just as we did with the national team. We’ll definitely play together… though I don’t think it’ll be at Barcelona,” he said.
