Having played in the Greek league for Panathinaikos in recent years, Marius Grigonis was chosen by journalists abroad to speak about what’s happening in the world ofbasketball.
The Lithuanian star, who ultimately left the Greens this year to join Žalgiris Kaunas, commented on the revelations about match-fixing and, more generally, on the state of Greek basketball.
“The truth is that there were many suspicions,” were his first words in statements to the website Basketnews after his team’s game yesterday.
“Our team’s owner, Dimitris Giannakopoulos, always said so, even when everyone was trying to make him look like he was talking nonsense. But now everything has come to light. There were a few games—maybe even more—where, honestly, it wasn’t hidden… But when you’re playing, you can’t prove it. You think, ‘Maybe this is one of those days…’,” he said, and continued:
“But it’s good that these incidents were finally brought to light, because the sport has absolutely nothing to do with them. And unfortunately, such incidents do occur in sports—from soccer to basketball—and I honestly believe they exist and that those responsible should be caught.”
