Matchday 7 of the Premier League was packed with action, as Manchester City continued its impressive run, Liverpool returning to winning ways with a comeback victory, and Fulham celebrating its first three points of the season.
The “Citizens” defeated Ipswich 3-2, with Erling Haaland once again playing a starring role, while the “Reds” capitalized on their numerical advantage to defeat Brentford 2-1. Meanwhile, Álvaro Arbeloa’s team defeated Hull 1-0 and took a big step up the standings.
City once again had Haaland in top form
Manchester City continued its perfect record in the league, defeating Ipswich 3-2, just a few days before their Champions League clash with AEK at the Etihad. Despite the shadow still cast over the club by the case involving 114 financial violations, Enzo Maresca’s team remains unstoppable on the field.
The home team took the lead in the 19th minute when Foden capitalized on a pass from Doku and sent the ball into the net. Ipswich’s response was immediate, with Maeda equalizing to make it 1-1 just two minutes later, taking advantage of the space he found in the opposing defense.
City, however, quickly regained the lead. In the 34th minute, Kovacic sent in a cross, and Haaland headed it in to make it 2-1. The Norwegian forward struck again in the 69th minute, when he received a through ball from Endiaye and finished the play perfectly to make it 3-1.
Haaland found the back of the net for a third time in the 85th minute, but the goal was disallowed following a VAR review. Ipswich didn’t give up and pulled one back in the 90th minute with a well-taken penalty by Fleming, but they didn’t have time to mount a comeback. Thus, City improved to 7-0 and now turns its attention to the European clash with AEK.
Liverpool came back to win against Brentford
Liverpool had to significantly step up their performance in the second half to come away with a 2-1 victory at Brentford’s home ground. The home team had managed to take the lead shortly before halftime, but Yarmolyuk’s red card shifted the balance of the game.
In the first half, the “Reds” failed to capitalize on their chances, with Barkola missing a key opportunity in a one-on-one situation. In contrast, Brentford found the net in the 44th minute, when Thiago created a chance from the right and Lewis-Potter beat the opposing defense with a header to make it 1-0.
The game-changing moment came in stoppage time of the first half. Yarmolyuk headbutted Zake and was sent off following a VAR review, leaving his team down to ten men.
Liverpool capitalized on their numerical advantage and pressed for the equalizer. In the 62nd minute, Muñoz capitalized on an excellent through ball from Wirz and tied the score at 1-1. Eight minutes later, Isaac completed the comeback after a header-pass from Barkola, making it 2-1.
Arne Slot’s team also hit the crossbar through Barkola toward the end, while Brentford finished the match with nine players, as Janelt was sent off with a second yellow card. Liverpool thus returned to winning ways and secured a valuable away result.
First Three Points for Arbeloa’s Fulham
Fulham celebrated its first victory of the season, defeating Hull 1-0 at Craven Cottage. The result provided a much-needed boost in the standings for Álvaro Arbeloa’s team, which had been seeking its first win in this season’s Premier League for some time.
The home team took control from the opening minutes and dominated possession, making it very difficult for the visitors to build any momentum. Their dominance paid off in the first half when Iwobi capitalized on a serious defensive error by Hull and sent the ball into the net for a 1-0 lead.
Hull tried to respond after the break and push for the equalizer, but Fulham managed their lead and kept their opponents away from their goal. The final minutes were tense, as Sessegnon was sent off in stoppage time for a hard tackle on Vaz. Despite being a man down, Fulham held on to the 1-0 lead and celebrated three points that could prove decisive for the rest of the season.
