They deserved it, and they got it. Spain defeated Argentina 1-0 in the World Cup final and returned to the top of the world for the first time since 2010, winning (just as they did back then) both the Euro and the World Cup in succession.
Rodri was the last to step onto the special stage set up at MetLife Stadium and lifted the second World Cup in the history of La Roja. The one who, however, sought to steal the spotlight from the stars was Donald Trump. Specifically, after presenting the medals to the finalist teams alongside Gianni Infantino—as well as the coveted trophy—the U.S. president wanted to remain on stage, even after Rodri lifted the trophy.
And that’s when the awkward moment of the evening began. Trump initially appeared to be leaving, but he returned, waved to the crowd again, did a little dance move (!), and stood on the right side of the stage, next to the Spanish players who were waiting—visibly uncomfortable—for their captain to lift the trophy.
The FIFA president literally ran toward him, presumably to signal that he should leave. Laughing awkwardly, he tried to shoo him away, but to no avail. Trump remained there until the moment Rodri lifted the trophy and the Spanish celebration began.
