Argentina is expected to play in the World Cup semifinal against England on Wednesday (10:00 p.m.) not in its traditional home jersey, but in blue, according to the country’s media. In fact, some reports indicate that a request to that effect was submitted to FIFA and was approved.
It is worth noting that the “Albiceleste” had played in blue jerseys during the unforgettable 1986 World Cup quarterfinal in Mexico, when they prevailed 2-1 with Diego Maradona scoring with the… "Hand of God," as well as what is arguably the most beautiful goal ever scored in a World Cup, dribbling past every player in his path.
Argentina also wore the blue jersey in the Round of 16 match of the 1998 World Cup against England, when they prevailed in a penalty shootout. In contrast, in the most recent World Cup match between the two teams, in 2002 in Japan, Argentina wore its traditional uniform and lost 1-0 to England in the group stage on a goal by David Beckham.
