The management of the Como women’s team took a step that shows that even in professional sports there is humanity, by extending Roberta Pichi’s contract through the end of the 2027–28 season, following the diagnosis of breast cancer in the team’s veteran forward, who plays in the Serie A league.
As announced, the 34-year-old Italian soccer player will have the support of the club’s medical team, which will work closely with the specialists overseeing her care.
“Everyone at Como 1907 stands by Roberta and will provide her and her family with all the support they need in the coming months. At this time, we ask that Roberta’s privacy be respected as she focuses on her treatment and recovery,” the statement reads.
For her part, Piki wrote in a social media post: “Nothing can ever be taken for granted, and I am lucky. It’s time for me to fight this battle, but I’ll come back even more determined.”
