Cyprus at the Mediterranean Games: From its first appearance in Casablanca in 1983 to record participation in Taranto in 2026

From 1983 to the present

With the largest delegation in the history of the Cyprus Olympic Committee at the Mediterranean Games, Cyprus is traveling to Taranto for its 12th appearance in the event. The 20th Mediterranean Games “Taranto 2026” will take place from August 21 through September 3, with the Cypriot delegation comprising 145 athletes from 24 sports federations—numbers that set new records. For the first time, Cyprus is participating in the handball, equestrian, padel, and fin swimming events.

Cyprus’s participation in the Mediterranean’s largest sporting event began in 1983 in Casablanca, with just four athletes—two in sailing and two in judo. That same year, Cypriot track and field athletes competed for the last time as part of the Greek delegation. Since then, 793 athletes have participated in delegations organized by the Cyprus Olympic Committee at the Mediterranean Games. Track and field tops the list with 216 participants, followed by swimming with 75, shooting with 70, gymnastics with 59, and then judo and sailing with 36.

Judo is the only sport that has been represented in every Cypriot delegation since 1983. Since 1987, track and field, swimming, shooting, gymnastics, and wrestling have also been represented without interruption, while sailing was absent only from the 1987 Games.

The first haul of medals came in 1987 in Latakia, with two gold medals. Marios Hadjandreou in the triple jump and Mike Tymvios in skeet shooting made history as the first Cypriots to win gold at the Mediterranean Games. Hatzandreou repeated his success in 1991 in Athens, becoming the first Cypriot to win two gold medals in the same event.

The first medal won by a Cypriot female athlete came in 1997 in Bari, when Dora Kyriakou won the silver in the 400-meter race. Twelve years later, in 2009 in Pescara, Eleni Artymata (track and field) and swimmer Anastasia Christoforou won the first “women’s” gold medals in the competition’s history.

In total, up through Oran in 2022, Cyprus has won 65 medals: 19 gold, 21 silver, and 25 bronze. Track and field dominates, having contributed 28 medals—nearly 43% of the total haul—including 12 of the 19 gold medals. Next are swimming with 8 medals, followed by gymnastics and shooting with 7 each.

Men won more than twice as many medals as women in this particular competition, both in total number (44 versus 21) and in the number of gold medals (13 versus 6).

The evolution of Cyprus’s presence on the medal table is particularly impressive. In 1983, Cyprus did not win a single medal, while in Oran in 2022, it recorded its all-time best performance, with 14 medals —5 gold, 2 silver, and 7 bronze. This performance placed Cyprus 13th out of 26 countries and set a record for both total medals and gold medals.

At the top of the individual standings are two athletes, each with six medals. Eleni Artymata has 3 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals, while Marios Georgiou also has 3 gold, 1 silver, and 2 bronze medals. The two of them therefore share first place in both the overall medal count and the number of gold medals.

Artymata is the only Cypriot athlete to have won three gold medals in three different events: the 200-meter race in 2009 and 2013, and the 400-meter race in 2018. Georgiou also has three gold medals, with two in gymnastics in 2018 and one in 2022. Hatzandreou, Kyriakos Ioannou, and Apostolos Parellis each have two gold medals. Also noteworthy are the three medals won in the 4×100-meter track relays—two by women’s teams and one by a men’s team.

The history of the Cypriot delegations at the Mediterranean Games is a journey from the four athletes in Casablanca in 1983 to the 145 in Taranto in 2026. A journey that reflects not only athletic progress but also the steady expansion and strengthening of Cyprus’s presence in Mediterranean sports.
