Maria Sakkari kicks off the Athens Open with a comfortable victory!
Greece’s top female tennis player dominated her match against Uzbekistan’s Polina Kudermetova, winning 2-0 in sets (6-0, 7-6) and celebrating her advancement to the next round of the first WTA tournament held in Athens in 36 years!
Sakkari completely dominated the first set, which she won by an impressive 6-0 with three breaks, but in the second set, her opponent fought back and played much better and more competitively.
Nevertheless, Sakkari made her fourth break to take a 3-1 lead in games, with Kudermetova narrowing the gap to 2-3, before another break gave Sakkari a 5-4 lead. The Uzbek player tied the score at 5-5 and then at 6-6, sending the second set to a tiebreak, but there, Sakkari found her rhythm again, breaking her opponent’s serve four times and reaching 6-1 to “seal” the victory!
