Spain’s World Cup victory further strengthened Luis de la Fuente’s position, with the federation now hoping he will remain in charge until the 2030 World Cup.
The Spanish coach’s current contract expires in 2028, but the RFEF plans to begin negotiations for a two-year extension of the agreement. This plan applies to both De la Fuente and the rest of his coaching staff, with the aim of ensuring the continuity of the team’s successful competitive project.
The 65-year-old coach is considered one of the key figures behind the “Roja’s” global success. Spain displayed consistency throughout the tournament and reached the top, defeating Argentina 1-0 in the final. This followed victories over Belgium and France, with the team reaffirming its dominance on the field.
De la Fuente took over the national team in December 2022, replacing Luis Enrique. Since then, he has built a stable core, given a leading role to players of the new generation, and led Spain to victory at Euro 2024 and to its second World Cup title in history.
The federation wants to finalize the matter after the summer, without pressure and away from the public eye. The goal is for De la Fuente to lead Spain to Euro 2028 and then to the 2030 World Cup, which Spain will co-host Portugal, and Morocco.
