The Men's National Handball Team wrote a special chapter in the history of Cypriot handball today, making its debut at the Mediterranean Games as part of the 20th edition, “Taranto 2026.”
In its first match of the tournament, our national team faced Algeria, providing a valuable experience for our international players against a strong opponent. Cyprus fought hard throughout the match, put up a good fight, and kept going until the final whistle, ultimately suffering a 33-24 defeat. At halftime, Algeria led 17–10.
Beyond the result, today marks a historic milestone for Cypriot handball. The Men’s National Team’s first appearance at the Mediterranean Games is a significant moment and, at the same time, a great opportunity for the team to gain valuable experience, compete at a high level, and continue to grow.
The top scorers for our national team were Ioulios Argyrou and Alexandros Charalambous, each with five goals. Nikolas Karkalatos and Fotis Misailidis each scored four goals, two each by Lucas Paraskevas and Ioannis Kritikos, and one goal each by Charalambos Antoniou and Christoforos Hatzipetrou.
The journey continues at “Taranto 2026,” with our national team already looking ahead to the tournament’s next challenges. Their next opponent is Tunisia on Tuesday (August 25 – 4:00 p.m.), while the third and final match in Group B is on Thursday (August 27 – 12:00 PM) against Greece.
