Liverpool got off to a perfect start in the Champions League group stage, defeating Atlético Madrid 2-1 at Anfield, combining the victory with a remarkable historic achievement.
The “Reds” became the first team in Champions League history to defeat Atlético Madrid in four consecutive head-to-head matches in the competition, establishing an impressive record against Diego Simeone’s team.
This streak began in the 2021–22 season. At that time, Liverpool emerged victorious in Madrid with a 3-2 win, and a few weeks later, they also prevailed at Anfield with a 2-0 victory. The two teams met again in the 2025–26 season, with the English side securing yet another victory, this time by a score of 3–2.
The fourth consecutive win came in this season’s opener, although the match didn’t start off on the right foot for Liverpool. It was Atlético who opened the scoring in the 16th minute, when Julián Álvarez spotted Marcos Llorente making a run behind the English defense, and Llorente coolly beat Alisson to make it 0-1.
Liverpool gradually increased the pressure, took control of possession, and looked for openings against Madrid’s well-organized defensive setup. The breakthrough came just before halftime, when Dominik Szoboszlai equalized in the 40th minute to level the score.
The second half began with the home team determined to complete the comeback. Just in the 49th minute, Alexis McAllister found the space he needed and, with a superb left-footed finish, sent the ball into the net for a 2-1 lead, sending Anfield into a frenzy.
