Time seems to have no effect on Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, who, at 37, continues to score goals and has now carved out a special place for himself in La Liga history.
The Deportivo La Coruña forward found the back of the net in the 1-1 draw against Getafe and became the first player in 17 years to score in each of the first five matches of a season in the Spanish league.
The last player to achieve something similar was Zlatan Ibrahimović in 2009, during his first season with Barcelona. Now, Aubameyang stands alongside the Swede on a very short list of players who have started a La Liga season by scoring in the first five matches.
The Gabonese player’s impressive streak began in the season opener against Elche and continued in matches against Málaga, Valencia, and Villarreal. Against Getafe, he scored in his fifth consecutive match, confirming his exceptional form.
His goal was, in fact, crucial for Deportivo. The Galician team found themselves trailing in the 66th minute, but in the 78th minute, Obameyang capitalized on a cross from Jeremie Pino and headed the ball in to tie the game at 1-1.
In this way, Antonio Hidalgo’s team maintained its unbeaten streak to start the season, continuing to be one of the league’s most pleasant surprises.
Oba-Meyang’s return to Spain has been impressive so far. The veteran forward has emerged as the undisputed star of newly promoted Deportivo from the very first weeks, with five goals and two assists in five matches.
At the same time, he has just become the 10th player in La Liga history to score in the first five matches of a season, joining a list that includes names such as Puskás, Amantio, Kini, Pandiani, and, of course, Ibrahimović.
