Karetsas: His mother left the VIP box and got into the ambulance with him

He was by his side
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Moments of intense suspense unfolded during the Champions League match between Dortmund and Villarreal, with Konstantinos Karetsas leaving the field early and being taken to the hospital for tests.

The 18-year-old Greek star, who was acquired this summer from Genk for 30 million euros, went down in the 23rd minute of the match. Shortly before that, he had sprinted during his team’s counterattack, but when he slowed down and passed the ball to Julian Rierson, it was immediately clear that he needed a break.

It was clear from the very beginning that he couldn’t continue. The medical staff rushed onto the field, and a stretcher was needed to carry him off. Dortmund fans stood up and gave him a warm round of applause as he was carried off the field.

The anxiety, however, was not confined to the field. A short time later, around 9:50 p.m., an ambulance arrived at the stadium, and Karetsas was carried out on a stretcher from the locker room to be transported to the hospital for further examination.

A particularly poignant moment occurred with his mother, Irini, who was in the VIP box. As soon as it became known that her son would be taken to the hospital, she immediately left her seat, went down to where the ambulance was parked, and got in with him so she could be by his side.

Dortmund subsequently announced that Karetsas had left due to traffic problems, noting that, given the circumstances, he was in good condition and was being transported to the hospital for the necessary tests.
