Olympiacos’ relationship with Thomas Walkup has reached a breaking point. According to a statement from the red-and-white basketball club, the Texas-born guard unilaterally terminated his contract, requesting his release.
Olympiacos calls this an unwarranted move, emphasizing that the player has a contract in effect through the summer of 2027 and calling on him to attend the scheduled medical and ergometric tests on Thursday; otherwise, the club “… reserves the right to use every legal means to safeguard its rights.”
It should be noted that Olympiacos exercised the +1 option in Walkup’s contract, extending it through the summer of 2027. The 33-year-old star, who has already spent five years with the team, has received an offer from Dubai BC for a contract worth 3 million euros per year. However, the Emirati team has not met Olympiacos’ demands, as the club is seeking 3 million euros for the player’s transfer. Reports indicate that the Arabs’ latest offer is close to 1.5 million euros.
The full announcement reads as follows:
Basketball player Thomas Walkup today submitted a unilateral written notice of termination of his contract to Olympiacos Basketball Club, requesting, without cause, his immediate release.
Olympiacos Basketball Club categorically states that the athlete’s contract remains in effect until the summer of 2027. Consequently, we expect him to arrive in Greece on Thursday, August 20, for his scheduled medical and ergometric examinations.
Otherwise, Olympiacos Basketball Club reserves the right to use every legal means to protect its rights.
