Klopp: “Greece played smartly and with discipline—it is no longer one of the smaller soccer nations.”

What he said after the game at Toumba
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Read what Germany’s national team coach, Jürgen Klopp, had to say after the match at Toumba.

In detail:

On the match and the result: “If someone had told me we’d put up a strong showing against Serbia and Greece, I wouldn’t have believed it. We didn’t have much time. The match ended scoreless. We managed to create chances, but we didn’t score.”

On Anton: “He played exceptionally well in tandem with Tiao. It was unfortunate that he had to replace the injured Slooterberg. He plays an important role in building up the play. He started off calmly and then picked up the pace. I’m completely satisfied. I could write a book about these players.”

On the four matches, the four assists, and the disallowed goal: “I was too far away to know for sure, but it was disallowed. Everyone got their chance on offense. Burhard scored the goal; he was lightning-fast and met my expectations. Now my evaluation has begun. We’ve gathered a lot of information.”

Regarding the results of the first transfer window, what conclusions has he drawn looking ahead to November: “I haven’t thought about November at all. After just one week of work, I didn’t believe we’d be this good. I’d heard we were at rock bottom. But I saw that I worked with 44 players and we found our way. Let’s follow it and keep moving forward. We’ve only beaten Serbia, but a few weeks ago we would have struggled. Today we took the first step; I’d really like to beat Greece. It’s no longer one of the smaller soccer nations.”

On the roster and November: “Of course, the roster will necessarily be smaller. Right now we have a pool of players. There will be other changes as well. We need to settle on a specific roster. We’ve given 44 players a chance, and we now have alternatives for our positions. We have an idea of how we’ll shape our roster. We’ve given them confidence.”

On Troy: “I didn’t have a plan; I didn’t know what to expect. A few days ago, I realized it would be good for him to keep playing. He’s a rookie, but he has great determination and the right attitude to work hard. It’s an unusual position for him, but he rose to the challenge.”

On the two winless matches against Greece, what would he change: “I wouldn’t want to play another match against Greece (ed. note: humor). Greece played well—smartly and with discipline. If we’d scored a goal, they wouldn’t have been able to stop us.”
