Hercules came very close to its first victory in the top tiers of Greek soccer in nine full years. However, Volos didn’t let them celebrate, as they tied the game in the final moments, setting the final score at 1-1 at Panthessaliko Stadium, in the second matchday of the Stoiximan Super League.
“The Old Man” managed to open the scoring in the 27th minute with a stunning goal by Nanou. The African player, with a rocket of a shot, left Siampani frozen in his tracks to make it 1-0, however, the visitors’ task became considerably more difficult in the 54th minute, when Mir was shown a straight red card. In fact, just a few minutes later—specifically in the 56th minute—the visiting team’s coach was also sent off, as Mazzarri received two yellow cards in quick succession.
The Volos team fought with everything they had and scored the equalizer in the 84th minute through González, but, no matter how hard they tried, they couldn’t complete the comeback, with the final 1-1 score giving both teams their first point of the season.
This outcome leaves both sides with mixed feelings, as Heraklis missed a great opportunity for victory, while Volos avoided defeat.
