Olympiacos is continuing its efforts to sign a center forward right up until the last minute, having set the bar high. The “Red-and-Whites” denied yesterday all the names that had been circulating, presumably for tactical reasons and to avoid distracting the team from its preparations for tomorrow’s match against Jagiellonia; however, it is clear that talks are underway.
Reliable sources in Spain are reporting talks with Celta regarding Borja Iglesias, who is reportedly Imanol Alguacil’s top choice. The 33-year-old forward, who was on Spain’s World Cup roster, has lost his starting spot at Celta, his contract expires at the end of the season, but his situation is not straightforward. On top of that, he has an injury that, according to media reports in Vigo, will keep him sidelined until the end of the month, although the international break is coming up.
Also from Spain, the name of Borja Mayoral has come up, the 29-year-old Getafe forward, who has played just 11 minutes for the Madrid-based club this season and whose contract expires next summer. Last season, the Spanish star—who has spent six seasons at Getafe—scored 6 goals in 17 appearances.
Also mentioned are Scottish player Che Adams of Torino and Romanian player Marius Muadilmandji of Samsunspor, while Mauro Icardi is also in the mix—though with fewer chances since he hasn’t even participated in preseason training—and he commands a very high salary.
It’s not out of the question that a new name could emerge if no agreement is reached with any of the above, and there’s always the possibility of an additional signing in a position other than forward.
