Maria Markou: She represented Cyprus at the Commonwealth Games, and her home was broken into

Everything the Paralympic champion alleges
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Paralympic champion Maria Markou was the victim of a burglary; in a social media post, she revealed that an unknown individual managed to break into her home in the Agios Spyridonas neighborhood of Limassol and steal her scooter, after another attempted break-in had taken place just a few days earlier.

The incident occurred in the early morning hours of July 28, while she was abroad, representing Cyprus at the Commonwealth Games.

She also notes that this was not an isolated incident, as there had been previous break-in attempts, both at their own home and at neighboring homes, and she expressed deep concern for safety in the area.

Finally, she posted a photo and a video in which, as she states, the perpetrator’s face is clearly visible; he has not yet been identified.

In detail: “In the early morning hours of July 28, 2026, between 2:45 a.m. and 3:02 a.m., while I was abroad representing Cyprus at the Commonwealth Games, an unknown individual attempted twice, within a few days, to break into my residence in the Agios Spyridonas area of Limassol (Zakaki). The second time, the intruder managed to get inside and steal my motorcycle.

The perpetrator’s face is clearly visible in the photo and video below. To date, he has not been located. If anyone recognizes him or has any information that might help locate him, please contact me immediately.

The issue isn’t just the theft of the motorcycle. What’s more serious is that over the past few months, there have been repeated attempts to break into my home, as well as other incidents in the neighborhood. We now live every day in fear that someone might break into our home again, since people are entering homes and stealing whatever they find without being disturbed, without there appearing to be any real consequences or anyone to stop them.

I am a person with a disability, and the feeling that there is no real protection is particularly alarming. Today it might be me; tomorrow it could be an elderly person or anyone who is unable to protect themselves.

Please share this post so that it reaches as many people as possible and, most importantly, someone who might recognize this person and help locate them.

Let’s be vigilant and not turn a blind eye. Some people allow these individuals to come and go as they please and do whatever they want, without protecting us. Today it might be our neighbor’s home; tomorrow, it could be ours. Our safety concerns us all.”
