Paphos’s press officer, Christoforos Matthaiou, spoke on “SPOR FM 95.0,” commenting on the team’s Super Cup victory and its performance so far this season.
He then went on to discuss roster additions, Basuamina’s departure, the status of injured players, and the upcoming match against Olympiacos.
Here are his comments in detail:
On winning the Super Cup: “On our third attempt, we finally won the trophy that had been missing. No matter what the team has achieved in recent years, winning titles—big or small—helps us grow. And that’s the best thing for the team and the coach. Beating last year’s champion, Omonia, gives us a boost, and we’re looking forward to what’s next. We deserved the win; the team was especially outstanding in the second half.”
On the team: “There’s quality in the roster; all the players are showing that they want to be here. There’s passion and determination—qualities that our coach also instills. We’ve already seen this in Europe; if we continue to bring these qualities to the field, we’ll be successful by the end of the season.”
On the new players: “The players are working hard, and it’s clear they’ve come here wanting to help. The common thread among the players is their quality and professionalism. We didn’t achieve our Europa League goal, but we’ve qualified for the Conference League and we’re moving forward to the next matches.”
On Sa Pinto and the work being done: “So far, the team is doing very well, and the work being done is evident; we hope they continue this way.”
On potential reinforcements: “As for Patrao, there may be official announcements later today. Beyond that, I’m not ruling anything out. If something worthwhile comes up, I’ll take the necessary steps to bring him in. I’m not ruling anything out—all possibilities are open.”
On Basuamina: “He’s left, but whenever he was called upon to play, he showed professionalism. We’ll certainly remember his goal against Maccabi, and we wish him every success in Portugal. As for the roster, we’ll see; there are first-team players who were injured. It’s not clear yet—we’ll see.”
On the European roster: “The roster in Cyprus is different from the one in Europe; unfortunately, some players will always be left out. Gorter, Zague, and Mamadov are not registered.”
On injuries: “Biel has returned, but it was decided not to use him given how the game unfolded; Mamadov’s injury isn’t serious—we expect him back soon, as well as Brito. Apart from the well-known long-term injuries, they’re expected to return soon. I hope everyone will be ready for action in the upcoming games.”
On Olympiacos: “The goal is clear. This is a team that beat us last year. The team is coming off a win. These games carry risks. We need to take them seriously, aim for the win, and get a tough game out of the way.”
To the fans: “Once again, a big thank you. We especially count on their support in these kinds of games. The team brings them joy, so we want them by our side during this difficult stretch.”
