AEL announced that it will file an official complaint with all relevant authorities against referee Konstantinos Fella, following the events that unfolded during the match against Anorthosis. Despite the 2-0 victory, there is deep concern within the Limassol-based club, particularly following the serious injuries sustained by Yannick Gomis and Hamza Čataković.
At the same time, the club has already sent a letter to the Cyprus Football Association (CFA), expressing its positions and concerns regarding refereeing and requesting a meeting with the Federation and the Chairman of the Referees’ Committee. The management makes it clear that it will take institutional action, demanding, as it states, equal treatment and consistency in the application of the regulations.
At the same time, the management calls on the team’s supporters to rally behind the club and offer their active support, while announcing immediate steps to strengthen the roster in light of the two significant losses.
At the end of the announcement, AEL sends its own clear message, emphasizing that it will continue to defend its interests “until the Augean stables are cleaned.”
The full statement reads as follows:
“The Board of Directors of AEL FC LTD would like to express its gratitude to the team’s fans for their overwhelming presence, their cheers, passion, and unwavering support during the first official match of the new soccer season.
Our team’s important 2-0 victory yesterday against Anorthosis is the result of the hard work, focus, and character demonstrated by our players and coaching staff.
Despite the victory, yesterday’s match leaves the AEL family with a particularly unpleasant and painful feeling, as our team will be without two of its key players for a long time: Yannick Gomis and Hamza Čataković.
The Limassol Athletic Union has already expressed, in a letter, its position and concerns regarding the events that took place during the match, and has requested a meeting with the Cyprus Football Association and the Chairman of the Referees’ Committee, so that issues related to refereeing can be discussed through the proper channels and substantive answers can be provided. At the same time, tomorrow it will file an official complaint against referee Konstantinos Fella with all relevant authorities.
At the same time, AEL must look ahead. The season is long, and there will be difficulties and challenges. The management of AEL FC LTD recognizes the competitive damage caused by these two serious injuries and will immediately take the necessary steps to strengthen the team, with the goal of remaining competitive throughout the season.
In this effort, AEL needs its fans more than ever. We call on every AEL fan to actively support the team, both from the stands and through AEL’s available services and initiatives, such as season tickets, tickets for home games, official merchandise from the AEL Official Shop, the Lions Club, and the team’s other initiatives, which will be announced periodically.
The presence, support, and strength of our fans are essential. We call on everyone to rally together, to stand by the players and the coaching staff with passion and responsibility, protecting AEL and its efforts.
On the other hand, AEL will continue, with absolute dedication and in accordance with the rules, to defend its interests and demand what is self-evident—namely, equal treatment, consistent enforcement of regulations, and protection for all players, until the Augean stables are cleaned out.
In difficult times, what the team needs is what only the AEL community can offer: unity, faith, and tangible support.”
