Argentina defeated Switzerland 3-1 in extra time and celebrated its advancement to the World Cup semifinals. There, they will face England, with both teams vying for a spot in the final.
Lionel Messi—who is having yet another outstanding World Cup—will face the “Three Lions” for the first time, and he has commented on this unprecedented matchup.
Specifically, he noted that his only exposure to the English national team has been through videos and photos, pointing out that he has played against every other team except them. At the same time, he praised the team, describing it as a soccer superpower; but as both he and his teammates noted, they will face them with the seriousness the occasion demands in order to secure the coveted qualification.
Here is what he said in detail:
“Everything I’ve seen and remember (about the 1986 Argentina–England match) comes from videos and images that Argentines watch and relive constantly.
But I believe this team is used to facing any opponent. Obviously, facing England is something special, because they’re one of the top powers in soccer, and matches against teams like that are always special.
Personally, this will be the first time I’ve played against them. I’ve played against almost everyone except England, so it will be special for that reason as well.
And we’ll approach it exactly for what it is: a World Cup semifinal against a soccer superpower, a great team. We’ll try to be in the best possible shape so we can fight for a spot in the final once again.”
