In a historic match against Greece, the Cyprus Men’s National Handball Team concluded its participation in the group stage of the 20th Mediterranean Games “Taranto 2026,” marking its first-ever participation in the event.
Greece prevailed 39–24, with the halftime score at 18–11; however, the result takes a back seat to the significance of our national team’s presence at this major event. Our national team players fought their own battle against a particularly strong opponent, gaining valuable experience and playing at a high level.
The match was made even more special by the shared moment when both teams stood as the national anthem was played, in a match that pitted the two countries against each other and highlighted the special ties between Greece and Cyprus.
For our national team, participating in the Mediterranean Games is already a historic milestone. The journey for our national team does not end here, as it will now compete in the classification matches for 5th–8th place.
It should be noted that Greece has equaled its best performance in the competition, a feat it first achieved at the 1991 Mediterranean Games in Athens, and is now aiming for its first medal at the Mediterranean Games.
