The Cyprus Olympic Committee has announced the competition schedule for the delegation at the 20th Mediterranean Games on Tuesday, September 1. In gymnastics, Marios Georgiou is aiming for a podium finish in the all-around, having qualified in first place in the preliminaries, while Alexa Stais in Equestrian is aiming for a top finish in the Show Jumping final. Meanwhile, the Women’s 3×3 National Basketball Team is competing in the semifinals, with its sights set on the podium.
In sailing, the final qualifying races are wrapping up ahead of the medal races, with Andriani Georgiou sitting in second place in the ILCA 6 class, just one point behind the leader. With strong showings in track and field and karate, the Cypriot delegation continues its efforts with the goal of achieving new distinctions and even more moments that will keep Cyprus in the spotlight.
Equestrian: Alexa Stais Aims for a Top Finish in the Show Jumping Final
Alexa Stays is preparing to compete for a top finish in the Individual Show Jumping event, marking the sport’s debut at the Mediterranean Games. The Cypriot athlete, who lives and trains in Germany, has already captured the attention of the Cypriot delegation and sports fans with her performances.
Together with her horse, Kantu 3, she completed two flawless rounds in the qualifying rounds leading up to the final—a feat achieved by only 21 of the 45 riders. Stays is now among the riders who are serious contenders for a very high ranking. If she repeats her outstanding performance in both rounds of the final without any mistakes, her final placement will be determined by her time, paving the way for a significant achievement for Cyprus.
Track and Field: The six track and field athletes competing at the “Giuseppe Valente Stadium” on Tuesday, September 1, will strive for the best possible results as they take part in three finals and one qualifying round. Competition will begin at 6:50 p.m. Cyprus time.
The action will kick off with Kalypso Stavrou, who will run in the first qualifying heat of the 400-meter hurdles, aiming for a strong performance. Eleven athletes will compete in the qualifying round across two heats, and Kalypso, with a season best of 59.39, is ranked 11th.
Five minutes later, Petros Michaelides will compete in the shot put final, which also features 11 athletes. With this year’s mark of 19.49 m, Michaelides ranks 9th among the competitors, and if he has a good competition, he has a chance to finish in the top six.
Only seven athletes are competing in the High Jump Final, with Loizos Chrysostomou being one of them. Three athletes stand out among them: Olympic champion Gianmarco Tamberi (2.32 m this year), who will be competing for medals, while the remaining four are aiming for a top-eight finish, with Chrysostomou holding the sixth-best performance this year among the participants (2.19 m).
In the javelin throw, there will be two Cypriot athletes in the final, which features 13 competitors. Christiana Ellina (54.99 m) and Irini Jane Theodorou (52.80 m) hold the two lowest rankings among all participants based on their performances this year.
Gymnastics: Marios Georgiou and [name] will compete in the men’s all-around finals, and Georgia Charalambous in the women’s.
Karate: The karate competition kicks off with five of the eight athletes from the sport’s delegation in Taranto taking part. First to compete will be the experienced Irini Kontou (-50 kg), followed by Andreas Gabriel (-60 kg), Panagiotis Loizidis (-67 kg), and in the afternoon, Maria Kyprianou (-55 kg) and Stavros Charalambidis (-75 kg) will compete.
The karate team’s goal is to repeat or even improve upon its performance from the previous competitions in Oran, where Markos Tsangaras won the bronze medal.
Sailing
It’s the final day of racing in the ILCA7, ILCA6, and iQFoil classes before Wednesday, when the medal races will take place. There will be two races in the ILCA classes for men and women, and four in the iQFoil class. For Andriani Georgiou, who is in second place in the ILCA6 class, just one point behind the leader, every race will be crucial to her bid for a medal, as the point differential among the top five competitors in the event is just five penalty points. The other five sailors—Marilena Makri (ILCA6), Aimilios Poeros, Errikos Karatzis (ILCA7), Natasha Lappa (iQFoil), and Iakovos Christofidis, will compete to improve their positions in the standings, as they are currently far from the top spots.
