With 15 athletes competing in four sports, the 20th Mediterranean Games continue in Taranto. The opening day of judo, with four athletes competing on Friday, August 28, sends an optimistic message that by the end of the day, the Cypriot Olympic may have increased its current tally of two gold, two silver, and two bronze medals, which currently places it in 11th place in the medal standings among 26 countries.
Competitions continue in sailing and tennis, while Achilleas Sophocleous also has his sights set high in air rifle.
Here is a breakdown of the Cypriot entries:
In judo, the first day of competition features four weight classes in which Cypriot athletes are competing. Competing will be Sofia Asvestas (-52 kg), Petros Christodoulides (-66 kg), Odysseas Georgakis (-73 kg), and Kyprianos Andreou (-81 kg). The competition will begin at 10:00 a.m. with the first round. Sofia Avgousta and Petros Christodoulides received a “bye” in their first match, and based on the draw and the strength of their opponents, they are the two athletes most likely to reach the podium.
In sailing, the ILCA7, and ILCA6 classes will continue with two races in each category, while four races are scheduled for the iQFoil (men’s and women’s), provided there is sufficient wind. In the ILCA6 class, Andriani Georgiou aims to maintain her first-place position in the standings, and Marilena Makri aims to make the most of her potential and move closer to the top spots, while Natasa Lappa will try to solidify her position among the leaders. In the respective men’s categories, Aimilios Poeros and Errikos Karatzis (ILCA 7) and Iakovos Christofides (iQFoil) are aiming to improve their positions to enter the medal race in their respective men’s categories.
In tennis, Cypriot players are competing in three events. Melios Efstathiou and Andreas Timinis will compete in the singles round of 16 and aim to advance to the quarterfinals, while Raluca Serban and Andrea Georgiou Papakyriakou will face the Spanish duo in the quarterfinals.
In shooting, in the 10m Air Rifle event, Achilleas Sophocleous’s primary goal is to qualify for the top ten in the final, and from there, anything is possible if he’s having a good day. A total of 25 shooters are competing in the event.
