Tottenham made a landmark signing, as they finalized the acquisition of Matheus Fernandes from West Ham, paying 100 million euros—a new record in the club’s history.
The 21-year-old Portuguese international midfielder signed his new contract with the “Spurs” and is one of Roberto De Zerbi’s key choices to strengthen the midfield ahead of the new season. In his first comments, he revealed that the Italian coach played a decisive role in his decision to move to North London.
With this signing, Tottenham has surpassed its previous record of 65 million euros, which it spent to sign Xavi Simón from Leipzig in the summer of 2025.
Fernandes is coming off a busy season with West Ham, recording 36 Premier League appearances, three goals, and four assists, while also standing out for his defensive consistency. Before joining the “Hammers,” he had played for Sporting, Estoril, and Southampton, and last March he made his debut with the Portuguese national team.
However, Fernandes’s record may not last very long. According to English media reports, Tottenham has already reached an agreement with Newcastle to sign Sandro Tonali in a deal that could reach 115 million euros, which would set a new club record.
