The end of Mexico’s World Cup run has brought interest in Orbelín Pineda back to the forefront of the domestic press. According to a Mexican website, the AEK midfielder has already received an offer from Monterrey—coached by Matías Almeyda—as well as another proposal. Mexican sources report that the international star has not yet made a decision, while AEK wants to extend his contract for another three years.
It should be noted that Pineda’s contract, which expires in the summer of 2027, includes a buyout clause for Mexican clubs amounting to 8 million euros—a sum that must be paid in a lump sum, not in installments, if a club from his home country wishes to sign him.
The report states in detail:
“Orbelín Pineda has been Monterrey’s top transfer target for the past three years, with the ‘Rayados’ making a strong push to sign him ahead of the 2026 Apertura. This time, in fact, they have a significant advantage, as the man most closely associated with the Mexican midfielder’s career is now on their bench. Monterrey is now led by Matías Almeida, who has personally requested the signing of the international midfielder, as he considers him one of his most trusted players. The two had worked together very successfully at both Chivas and AEK, winning titles, a fact that has led the Argentine coach to make Pineda’s signing his top transfer priority.
Monterrey’s offer is already in the hands of the 29-year-old midfielder, however, he is reportedly postponing his final decision due to his participation in the World Cup, while he is also considering another offer.
While Monterrey is trying to bring him back home after four years in Europe, Pineda also has the option to remain with AEK. After winning the Greek league title in the 2026–27 season, AEK has made retaining the Mexican star its top priority. According to Greek media reports, AEK has offered him a new three-year contract with a pay raise, which would make him the team’s highest-paid player. At the same time, the club is offering him the incentive of playing in the next UEFA Champions League.”
