History was made at the 2026 World Cup before the group stage had even ended. By the end of the 15th day of the tournament, the record of 172 goals set at the 2022 World Cup was broken, as the current tournament now stands at 177 goals.
Aston Trasti’s goal, just three minutes into the match between the U.S. and Turkey in Group 4, was the tournament’s 173rd, breaking the previous record.
The historic record was broken in the 59th match of the 2026 World Cup. In contrast, the 172 goals scored in the 2022 World Cup were scored across a total of 64 matches.
It is worth noting that the 2026 World Cup includes 104 matches—40 more than the 64 matches in the 2022 tournament— following the expansion of the tournament from 32 to 48 teams.
