There has been a twist in the Ruben Vargas saga, as everything indicates that the Swiss winger will remain at Sevilla, at least until the next transfer window.
The 28-year-old international was one of the players who dominated the Spanish club’s transfer news this past summer, with the possibility of his departure having been in the spotlight since the end of last season. His performances for Switzerland at the World Cup, where the national team reached the quarterfinals, further fueled interest in him.
In recent days, Olympiacos had entered into negotiations with Sevilla to sign him, but the two clubs were unable to reach an agreement on the terms of the transfer. With the window closing and no other official offer on the table for the Spanish club, the most likely scenario is now that Vargas will remain at “Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.”
The situation had also affected how Sevilla managed the player. Due to the prospect of his transfer to Olympiacos, Luis García Plaza chose not to play him in either the 3-1 victory over Bilbao or the 3-1 loss to Atlético Madrid, in order to avoid the possibility of an injury that could affect the negotiations.
