In an effort to unlock the enormous potential for the growth of basketball—which will benefit professional athletes, teams, and, above all, fans— the NBA and FIBA issued a joint statement with a clear message.
That they are continuing their efforts to bring their plan to create a league in Europe to fruition.
It should be noted that a few days ago, the NBA’s acquisition proposal was rejected by all EuroLeague shareholders, including Panathinaikos and Olympiacos.
The decision was made unanimously at the meeting held in Como, with the only difference being that some teams were open to negotiation while others were categorically opposed.
The full NBA-FIBA joint statement reads:
“A partnership between the EuroLeague, FIBA, and the NBA unites European basketball and can unlock the sport’s immense potential across Europe, for the benefit of teams, players, and, above all, fans. The NBA and FIBA remain fully committed to their plan and are moving forward with the creation of a new league in Europe, in an effort to build a stronger basketball ecosystem alongside partners who share the same vision for growth, recognize the opportunities, and uphold the core values of the European sports model.”
