Lonnie Walker had been hoping for some time to return to the NBA to play his eighth season in the world’s best league. He took all the necessary steps by sending his agents to the U.S., became a target for EuroLeague teams, but he found what he was looking for with the Nuggets, who offered him a one-year contract worth up to $3.3 million.
However, according to the “Denver Post,” the 27-year-old guard’s deal with the Denver team does not guarantee him an immediate spot on the roster or the chance to play alongside Nikola Jokić, as was the case with Alpha Diallo.
Instead, Lonnie Walker will have to earn his spot among Dave Yerger’s options by participating in the Nuggets’ training camp. In fact, as reported, there are currently two open spots on Denver’s roster, so the former Maccabi player will have to work hard to achieve his goal.
It’s worth noting that the Nuggets’ financial situation is particularly strained, as their salary cap stands at $223,460,000—a factor that limited their options in Walker’s case, which is why the team chose to offer him a non-guaranteed contract.
If everything goes as the player himself hopes, he will play for his new team, having previously played for the San Antonio Spurs, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Brooklyn Nets, and the Philadelphia 76ers.
The report reads as follows
“Lonnie Walker’s deal with the Denver Nuggets is a training camp contract, according to league sources cited by the ‘Denver Post.’
The American guard/forward will compete for a spot on the team’s roster during preseason training for the upcoming season. The Nuggets, for their part, still have two open spots on their roster.”
