On the occasion of the 52nd anniversary of the dark events of August 14, 1974, Nea Salamina sends its own message of remembrance and condemnation regarding the second phase of the Turkish invasion of Cyprus.
The “Red-and-Whites” unequivocally condemn the events of August 14 and honor the memory of those who lost their lives, as well as all those who were uprooted from their ancestral homes.
The statement: “NEA SALAMINA OF AMMOCHOSTOS, on the occasion of the somber anniversary of August 14, 1974, unequivocally condemns the second phase of the Turkish invasion, which definitively sealed the tragedy of our homeland.
On that day, our city was hastily evacuated amid fear and uncertainty. The streets, the houses, the neighborhoods, the squares, and the beaches of Famagusta fell silent as its residents were forced to flee, leaving behind their lives, their memories, and their dreams. Since then, Famagusta has remained closed off and under occupation, with its buildings standing as silent witnesses to displacement and occupation.
For NEA SALAMINA OF FAMAGUSTA, August 14, 1974, is the day we lost our home, our stadium, our stands, and the neighborhoods where generations of Salaminans grew up. It is the day our team became a refugee club, which has ever since carried Famagusta and its people in our hearts. Every match, every jersey, every time we take the field is a way to keep the memory of our city and its people alive.
On this day of remembrance, NEA SALAMINA OF FAMAGUSTA honors those who were lost, those who are missing, and all the people of Famagusta who are still experiencing displacement. We do not forget our city; we do not accept the occupation; and we will not stop fighting for the day when Famagusta will come back to life with its people returning to their homes and neighborhoods.
