FIFA President Gianni Infantino is on thin ice and under enormous pressure, as he was poised to sell a majority stake in the World Cup to private investors. The reaction from UEFA and the national federations was immediate, and although the proposal was immediately shelved, his stance has sparked a storm of controversy, and his position within the world governing body is considered extremely precarious, especially considering that we are approaching an election cycle, with elections scheduled for 2027.
Amid all this turmoil, UEFA, the AFC, and CONCACAF sent a joint letter yesterday (August 10), signed by Aleksander Čeferin, Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa, and Victor Montagliani. In it, they called for a fully independent investigation into the events surrounding this particular plan and, most importantly, into the actions of FIFA’s leadership, openly accusing Infantino of acting on his own initiative without providing any information.
However, there is one person who openly supports Infantino’s continued tenure, and that is none other than Donald Trump. The President of the United States of America stated on his personal Truth Social account that it would be a huge mistake if, for any reason, FIFA were to consider replacing him, as he noted, he is a fantastic person who created the best World Cup of all time.
“FIFA would be making a terrible mistake if, for any reason, it were to even consider replacing President Gianni Infantino.
“He’s fantastic, having just presided over the most successful World Cup—by a margin of four years—that has ever been held. If he leaves, it will never be that successful or profitable again,” Trump wrote on social media.
