Dortmund got off to a strong start in the new Bundesliga season, defeating Hamburg 2-0 at Signal Iduna Park, with the two Greek players making a major impact on the victory.
In just their second official match wearing the Dortmund jersey, Yiannis Konstantelias and Konstantinos Karetsas played a decisive role in securing the three points in the season opener, showing early on that they can play an important role on the team.
It all started in the 9th minute. Karetsas found Serou Girassi with a superb pass inside the box, and the French forward capitalized on the Greek attacking midfielder’s pass, opening the scoring for the home team.
Dortmund continued to control the game and created several chances before scoring their second goal just before halftime. This time it was Konstantelia’s turn to find the back of the net, albeit with a bit of luck.
The Greek star was in the right place and attempted to finish the play, with the ball deflecting off a Hamburg defender and ending up in the net for a 2-0 lead. It was a goal that may have been aided by a deflection, but it was the perfect reward for his outstanding performance.
In the second half, Dortmund managed their lead and weren’t particularly threatened, ultimately securing a comfortable victory in their season opener. The only downside was Delia’s injury-forced exit in the 54th minute. Feeling discomfort in the knee of his left leg, he left the field limping and supported by teammates, with Sabitzer replacing him. We are now awaiting the results of his medical tests to determine how serious his injury is.
