The U.S. secured its spot in the Round of 16 of the World Cup, defeating Bosnia and Herzegovina 2-0 in Santa Clara and continuing their run in the tournament.
Folarin Balogun was both a positive and negative factor for the Americans; he opened the scoring shortly before halftime, but was sent off in the 65th minute with a straight red card and will miss his team’s next match.
Bosnia tried to respond and sought the equalizer, but the U.S. managed their lead well and even extended it with an impressive direct free kick by Malik Tillman in the 82nd minute to make it 2-0.
Now, Mauricio Pochettino’s team is turning its attention to a very challenging task, as it will face Belgium in the Round of 16. The match is scheduled for early Tuesday morning (July 7, 3:00 a.m.) in Seattle, with a spot in the World Cup quarterfinals at stake.
