Hanni Joins the Hall of Fame of… Own Goals: Two in the Same World Cup

A negative record
ALPHANEWSLIVE

Mohamed Hani inadvertently hurt Egypt in a moment when everything went wrong.

In the match against Australia in the Round of 32 of the 2026 World Cup, the 30-year-old Egyptian defender made a huge blunder.

In the 54th minute, O’Neill took a free kick from the right, sending the ball into the heart of the opponent’s box. There, Mohamed Hani scored a magnificent goal with a perfect header, but into the wrong… net, as instead of clearing it, he sent the ball into his own team’s net, tying the score at 1-1 for Australia.

This was Hani’s second own goal of the tournament, because in the tournament opener against Belgium, the same player had scored for the “Red Devils” in the 1-1 draw.

The first player in history to score an own goal was Todor Vuchov way back in 1966, when he hurt his own country, Bulgaria twice and became the first to set this dubious record.
