The Netherlands defeated a tough Serbian team to secure Xavi’s first victory as head coach. The “Oranje” won 2-1 in Belgrade, where Greece had secured a big away win just a few days earlier. This was the first three points for Van Dijk’s team and his squad, bringing their total to four points in Group 2 of League A of the Nations League.
Meerdijk was the star of the show for the winners, opening the scoring in the 30th minute with a penalty kick after Terzić fouled Summerville, and then made it 2-1 off a pass from Til. In between (46’), Jović, who entered the match after halftime, equalized with a powerful close-range shot. The forward was the biggest threat to the Dutch defense until the end, with a header that went wide and a curling shot that went just wide in the final minutes.
Denmark broke through Wales’ resistance in the second half, with Davies scoring an own goal in the 53rd minute with a header following a foul by Damsgaard, while in the 66th minute, Isaksen scored with a shot from the penalty spot, on a play that again originated from a foul by Damsgaard.
Austria had no trouble against Kosovo, which it defeated more easily than the final 3-1 score suggests. Afengruber opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, with Adamou finding the back of the net in the 45’+2’, and Chukwemecha essentially sealing the match in the 61’ following a shaky save by the opposing goalkeeper. Zegrova pulled one back on a penalty kick in the 83rd minute.
Lithuania started the game just as they’d hoped, opening the scoring in the 9th minute with a flawless penalty kick by Kušis, leaving Balayev with no chance to react. Emreli equalized five minutes later, with the opposing goalkeeper, Bartkus, letting the ball slip through his legs. The entire second half didn’t see as much action as the first 15 minutes.
