Shocking scenes at the Lyon–Fenerbahçe Champions League playoff match, with Matteo Geduzzi taunting the home fans, which led to an unbelievable incident.
Fenerbahçe won 2-1 at Lyon and secured a spot in the group stage—under the stars. What followed, however, is expected to result in disciplinary action. The former Marseille player had clashed with the stands as early as warm-ups, responding to boos with obscene gestures.
After the match ended, he celebrated provocatively in front of the Lyon fans with more gestures, and the tension spilled over between the two teams, as fans tried to get close to the field but were prevented from doing so by security guards and the protective barriers in place.
Geduzzi didn’t stop there, as he appeared to be provocative once again, jumping up and down as he made his way to the locker room. Shortly before the final whistle, while objects were being thrown at him, one of his fans lunged at him with the intent to strike him.
A member of the visiting team’s staff protected him, while the fan was pushed aside by Fenerbahçe players and received a few light blows.
A full-scale brawl ensued, as several Fenerbahçe players rushed to the scene, —who attacked that individual—turning the area into a battlefield as Lyon fans also rushed in.
Thanks to the intervention of cooler heads, things calmed down after a while, in a scene that is expected to result in sanctions from UEFA.
