Christopher Cavana will referee the match between Germany and Greece in Augsburg on Sunday evening (Sept. 27, 9:45 p.m.), for the second matchday of the Nations League.
The English referee will be assisted by his compatriots Daniel Cook and Alexander James, with Thomas Bramal serving as the fourth official, while Scottish referee Andrew Dallas will be in charge of VAR, with Englishman Andrew Madley serving as AVAR.
The 41-year-old Cavana has previously officiated a match of great interest to Greek fans. In August 2024, he officiated Panathinaikos’ dramatic rematch against Ajax in Amsterdam during the Europa League qualifiers. The outcome was decided after an incredible 34-penalty shootout, with Ajax ultimately prevailing 13-12 and the “Greens” advancing to the Conference League playoffs at the time.
This season, the English referee has already officiated European matches, including Kairat Almaty vs. Anderlecht (0-3) and Fenerbahçe vs. Sturm Graz (2-0), as well as Premier League matches such as Bournemouth vs. Everton (1-1), Arsenal vs. Chelsea (2-1), and Crystal Palace vs. Ipswich (2-3).
Last February, he was suspended from Premier League matches for one weekend following the intense backlash caused by his decisions in the Aston Villa vs. Newcastle FA Cup match.
