The Hellenic Police released the details of the 34-year-old police officer who was found dead on Monday night, August 10, inside a standard police vehicle, raising numerous questions about the circumstances under which he lost his life.
It all began when his 38-year-old partner—also a police officer with whom he lived in Neos Kosmos—reported him missing to the Acropolis Police Station, as the 34-year-old had not been heard from and had not reported for duty.
Severe pulmonary edema is considered the most likely cause of death, as signs of hypoxia and pulmonary embolism were found; however, the autopsy and critical toxicology tests are still pending.
Andreas Skalaos, in addition to being a police officer, was a goalkeeper who made a significant impact in the local and national leagues of Attica. During his career, he defended the goal for Keravnos Kerateas for four years, serving as captain and celebrating two consecutive promotions (up to the Third National Division). He also played for two years with OF Holargos and had a stint with Agios Dimitrios.
The management of O.F. Holargos bid farewell to its former player with a statement, highlighting his character and professionalism:
“The entire family of the Holargos 1947 Supporters’ Club / Holargos FC 1947 expresses its deepest sorrow at the loss of our team’s former goalkeeper, Andreas Skalaio.
Andreas honored our club’s jersey, defended the Holargos FC goal with passion, ethos, and professionalism, and left his own unique mark both on the history of our team and in the hearts of all those who had the honor of playing alongside him and working with him.
During these extremely difficult times, our thoughts are with his family, friends, and loved ones.
The entire club extends its most sincere and heartfelt condolences for their great loss.
Rest in peace, Andreas. The Holargos family will never forget you.”
