One of the most moving moments of the group stage of the 2026 World Cup was provided by Guillermo Ochoa, who was given a standing ovation by Mexican fans during the match against the Czech Republic.
In the 78th minute of the match, the 40-year-old goalkeeper came on as a substitute for Raúl Rangel, officially making his sixth World Cup appearance. His entrance onto the field at the packed “Azteca” stadium was met with warm applause and intense emotion, as the iconic goalkeeper returned to the stadium where he made much of his history, both with the national team and with Club América.
Mexico defeated the Czech Republic 3-0, finishing the group stage with three wins in as many matches and securing first place in the group.
In fact, Ochoa played a key role in his team’s third goal, as his deep pass set up the play that led to Álvaro Fidalgo’s goal.
The veteran goalkeeper was named to Mexico’s World Cup roster for the sixth time, but this was the fourth different tournament in which he had played, as he had not seen any playing time in his previous appearances.
Before the match, several of his teammates had publicly expressed their desire to see him play. Alexis Vega described “Memo” as a legend of the Mexican national team, while Roberto Alvarado emphasized that the entire team would be delighted to see him back in goal, while also highlighting the excellent atmosphere in the locker room.
