George Russell secured his second consecutive and fourth pole position of the season, marking Mercedes’ “8 for 8,” in what was one of the most eventful qualifying sessions in recent Formula 1 history!
It was the British driver who, at the very end of Q3, set the fastest lap on the track at “Red Bull Ring” in Austria and, with a time of 1:06.113, secured pole position, meaning he will start tomorrow’s race from the front of the grid.
For this to happen, however, several minutes had to pass after the conclusion of qualifying, as the race stewards at the Austrian Grand Prix had to review whether his lap was legal.
This was because, seconds before he went through Turn 9, Max Verstappen lost control of his car, with the Dutchman’s Red Bull crashing into the barriers and triggering an immediate yellow flag!
Ultimately, the race stewards ruled that Russell did not do anything dangerous as he passed through that turn and that his approach was entirely legal, so his lap was officially counted and he secured pole position!
