AEK is finalizing the return of João Mário as the transfer window closes. The 33-year-old Portuguese midfielder, whose goal “sealed” the Super League title last season, has been in Greece for the past few hours to finalize his return.
Developments at AEK have been rapid in recent hours, following interest in Derek Koutesa and the ongoing process of his sale. It was clear that AEK intended to “push through” a new signing, and a name that had been mentioned frequently throughout the summer is finally finalizing the last details and signing his contract.

Just like last year, João Mário is joining AEK at the end of the summer transfer window, with the difference being that last year he was acquired on loan, while this year he is joining as a free agent following the termination of his contract with Besiktas. Thus, he returns to a familiar environment, and Marco Nikolić is adding to his roster a player he knows well and values, as was evident last season.
Last season, he made 31 appearances for AEK across all competitions, recording three assists and six goals, the most significant of which, of course, the one in stoppage time against Panathinaikos, two matches before the end of the Stoiximan Super League Playoffs, which “sealed” the title.
