The Grizzlies will not pay the $12.5 million due in the final year of Brandon Clark’s contract; Clark passed away on May 11.
The former NBA player, who was just 29 years old, was found unconscious in his bedroom in San Fernando Valley on May 11, 2026. His death was caused by a combination of heroin and cocaine, according to the official report from the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office.
Clark, who had signed a contract worth a total of $50 million in 2022, did not have a clause in the contract providing for compensation in the event of his death. The Grizzlies terminated their contract with him on July 3, just a few weeks after his death, in order to avoid paying the $12.5 million for the final year of his contract and to keep that amount off the salary cap.
Brandon Clark, who had no family but was planning to get married, managed to earn contracts totaling $49.6 million (gross) during his short career.
