A matchup between the favorite and a strong underdog at “Georgios Karaiskakis” Stadium!
Olympiacos and Atromitos face off tonight (9:30 p.m.) in Piraeus at the “Red-and-Whites’” home stadium, kicking off their campaign in the 2026-27 league season.
For its part, Olympiacos wants to get off on the right foot and secure the three points needed to kick off its bid to return to the top of the Stoiximan Super League.
This season, however, did not start well for them, as their elimination by Nijmegen in the third qualifying round of the Champions League sparked intense grumbling among the team’s fans, as well as a reaction from management. The meeting with Medilibar concluded with coach Vasco receiving a vote of confidence and remaining at the helm, while the team’s transfer plans are in full swing, with many changes to the roster as we approach the end of the transfer window.
Froiler and Tiknizian, whose signings were announced a few days ago, have been included in the roster for tonight’s match, and it’s very likely we’ll see them play, while Zota Silva is also available, having recovered from the injury that had been plaguing him. Clayton has also been included in the roster; he was unavailable for the matches against Nijmegen due to injury. Meanwhile, Olympiacos continues to work on transfers, with González having arrived in Athens on Friday, and efforts are underway to finalize the signings of a fullback, a winger, and one more midfielder.
Olympiacos’ roster: Ortega, Popovic, Stournaras, Saliakas, Smailović, Pirolá, Carmo, Retsos, Bruno, Tiknizian, Fortounis, Sa, Martins, García, Sipioni, Froiler, Tsikinio, Rodinei, Ese, Roca, Mouzakitis, El Kaabi, Zota Silva, Clayton.
On the other hand, Atromitos is entering this season with the goal of returning to the 5th–8th spots. They finished last season’s league in 9th place, largely due to a poor first half of the season, while Dusan Kerkez’s continued tenure as head coach signals a clear commitment to stability. The team made several quality additions to its roster this past summer and kicks off its season with a very difficult away match. In their first official match last Tuesday, they defeated PAS Pyrgos 3-1 in Peristeri thanks to goals by Nunes, Tsouber, and Tsiloulis, thereby advancing to the League Phase of the Superbet Greek Cup.
The Peristeri team will take the field for this challenging match with a full roster, and Dusan Kerkez has all his players available, as the roster includes both Magnusson—who was rested for the Superbet Greek Cup match against PAS Pyrgos—and their most recent signing, Dieng.
Atromitos’ roster: Athanasiou, Houtesiotis, Dieng, Lyratzis, Moundes, Papadopoulos, Magnusson, Uronen, Mitoglou, Stavropoulos, Tsakmakis, Hochza, Karamanis, Kotsis, Moutousami, Nunes, Tsingaras, Batos, Pnevmonidis, Tzovaras, Tsouber, Tsantilas, Tsiloulis.
In the two meetings between the teams last season, Olympiacos went 2-0, winning 3-0 in Peristeri and 2-0 in Faliro.
Probable starting lineups:
Olympiacos (José Luis Medilibar): Ortega, Rodinei, Retsos, Pirolá, Bruno, Ese, Mouzakitis, Zelsson, Gustavo Sa, Roca, El Kaabi
Atromitos (Dušan Kerkez): Houtesiotis, Mountez, Stavropoulos, Mitoglou, Uronen, Tsigaras, Moutousami, Nunes, Tsouber, Pneumonidis, Tsantilas
