Olympiacos will wrap up its preparations for tomorrow’s derby against Panathinaikos at “G. Karaiskakis Stadium” with one final practice session, ahead of Matchday 6 of the Stoiximan Super League. Imanol Alguacil now has nearly all of his players at his disposal and is waiting for the final session at Renti to finalize the starting lineup. Most of the pieces of the puzzle have fallen into place, though some questions remain, particularly in the midfield and attacking midfield positions.
The Spanish coach took advantage of the break to work on the fundamental principles he wants to see from his team. He emphasizes building up play with the ball deep from the back, tight spacing between the lines, proper organization, and more possession, as well as constant movement off the ball. At the same time, he insists on patience in ball circulation, avoiding simple passing errors, and immediate high pressure from the forwards and wingers, so that Olympiacos can disrupt the opponent’s initial build-up.
One of the key objectives is also greater efficiency in finishing. The “Red-and-Whites” create chances, but Al-Ghuathil wants better quality in the final decisions and a higher conversion rate, especially in home games. In midfield, the rotation of Puerta, Froiler, and Ese is being evaluated, while on the wings, Zelson Martins and Zota Silva are strong contenders. Roca has also entered the mix; his chances are improving, and it’s not out of the question that he could be one of the surprises in the starting lineup.
The final decisions will be made after today’s practice, with the Olympiacos coach taking into account both the condition of the international players and the demanding schedule ahead. The focus, however, is entirely on the derby against Panathinaikos, where Al-Ghuathil wants to see his team dictate the pace of the game, apply high pressure, and, above all, convert their chances into goals—in a match that serves as the first major test following the break.
