Omonia departed for Slovenia on an early morning flight from Larnaca Airport ahead of tomorrow’s (10/15 – 7:45 p.m.) match for the second round of the Europa League League Phase.
Before departure, Andreas Dimitriou spoke to the media. According to the “Greens’” spokesperson, Andreas Christou was ruled out due to an injury.
Beyond that, he noted that the “clover” needs a win in this match to stay in the running for qualification.
Regarding Akintola, he pointed out that the player is continuing his rehabilitation program, but his availability for the game against Olympiacos (10/19 – 7:00 p.m.) remains uncertain.
It should be noted that Aiting, Kitsos, Musialowski, Ondubajo, and Viktoros are not part of the squad due to their absence from the European roster.
Despite his injury, Brewers traveled with the squad, and his participation in the match will be determined at the last minute.
The squad consists of the following players: Kaminski, Fabiano, Michael, Simic, Konstantinidis, Koulibaly, Satka, Douvern, Nego, Christoforou, Balkovec, Kounounis, Andreou, Maric, Brewers, Tankovic, Tanase, Evandro, Mayabela, Montnor, Dionis, Kakoulis, Neophytou.
In Thursday’s match, Omonia is expected to have about 500 fans cheering them on, who made the trip to Slovenia.
Preparation will wrap up this afternoon with a training session at 7:00 p.m., while at 6:15 p.m., Henning Berg, accompanied by one of his players, will speak at the customary press conference.
Highlights of what Andreas Dimitriou said:
On the match against Celje: “It’s a very important game for us, especially after the result we had in the first matchday. We’ll try to come away with a win. We know it will be a tough task. They’re a team that has gained European experience in recent years, and—especially at home—they’re almost always competitive and a tough opponent to beat. We’ve been working hard these past few days to prepare for the conditions we expect in the game, and we hope everything goes well for us so we can return to Cyprus with a positive result, which will keep us in the running as we strive to achieve something meaningful in this tournament.”
On the team’s current status and absences: “The only player who is out is Andreas Christou, who had an injury.”
On Akinola’s condition: “As for Akinola, he’s currently following a rehabilitation program, and it’s nothing serious. He’s doubtful for Monday, and we’ll be monitoring his condition.”
On the importance of a positive result and the presence of fans: “From our perspective, this is a major competition at a much higher level, and it’s difficult for Cypriot teams to make it into the top eight. The result we achieved in our opener gives us the opportunity to strive for the best we can in this competition, since we’ve already secured a victory against a very strong team like Celta, and now we have our second group stage match. Certainly, if we manage to get a positive result, we’ll be able to continue believing that we can achieve something better in this tournament.”
