A mistake by Saeed Abu Farhi cost Israel dearly in its Nations League match against Austria.
The 20-year-old star tied the game at 1-1 in the 55th minute and went over to the corner flag, ripped it out of the ground, and used it as a prop in his celebration.
This immature act resulted in him receiving a second yellow card from the referee, who deemed his action provocative.
The red card proved costly for Israel, as the team, down to ten men, conceded two goals in the 90th and 93rd minutes, ultimately losing 3-1.
“We spoke with Abu Farhi; he knows he made a mistake. We supported him—we love him—and he scored a wonderful goal. He’ll learn his lesson from this, and of course, he won’t do it again. I’m not that familiar with the rules, but I’m sure that in most cases they wouldn’t have given a second yellow card for that,” said his teammate, Manor Solomon.
