In a statement, the Panathinaikos Football Club described Giorgos Vardinoyannis—who passed away at the age of 90—as an iconic figure in the history of Panathinaikos and Greek soccer.

“He was a man who left an indelible mark on the history of Panathinaikos and Greek soccer. With his strong personality, determination, and dedication to the team right up until the last days of his life, he left a mark that is an integral part of the history of the Shamrock. “The Panathinaikos family bids farewell to ‘The Captain’ with respect and deep emotion,” the statement reads.

The statement: “Panathinaikos FC expresses its deep sorrow at the loss of the club’s historic president, George Vardinoyannis.

‘The Captain’ was one of the most iconic figures in the history of Panathinaikos and in Greek soccer as a whole. He became synonymous with an entire era for the club, taking over as president of the soccer club in 1979 and remaining at the helm for more than two decades.

During his 21 years of active involvement with the club, Panathinaikos won six league titles, nine Cups, and three Super Cups, writing some of the most glorious chapters in its modern history.

Panathinaikos, during the era of Giorgos Vardinoyannis, also achieved great success in Europe. In the 1984–85 season, the team reached the semifinals of the European Champions Cup, a run that remains indelibly etched in the memories of the club’s fans. In the 1995-96, they repeated the feat in the Champions League, once again coming within a hair’s breadth of the final of Europe’s premier club competition with their historic victory over Ajax in Amsterdam.

Panathinaikos also had outstanding runs in the 1987–88 season, when it reached the quarterfinals of the UEFA Cup, as well as in the 1991–92 season, in the first experimental Champions League, where Panathinaikos once again found itself among Europe’s final eight. These were years in which the team stood with dignity and confidence against the major powers of European soccer, continuing with resounding success on the path paved by the legendary run at Wembley.

During his tenure, Panathinaikos’s renowned academy was also developed, producing great players who formed the core of the team that won Euro 2004. His vision for creating and developing youth programs to professional standards served as a guide for Greek soccer as a whole.

Beyond the titles, accolades, and memorable European nights, Giorgos Vardinoyannis was a man who left an indelible mark on the history of Panathinaikos and Greek soccer. With his strong personality, determination, and dedication to the team right up until the final days of his life, he left a mark that is an integral part of the history of the Shamrock.

The Panathinaikos family bids farewell to “The Captain” with respect and deep emotion.

Our sincere condolences go out to his family and loved ones.”
